How to Write a Great Business Resume

When writing your resume, follow these tips to help you get a job at your dream business.

It's no secret that writing a great resume is a crucial component of scoring your dream job. Now more than ever, businesses are using computer programs to sift through mountains of job applicants. To help your resume get noticed by your dream employer, use these tips to build a quality business resume:

1. Keep it professional
Don't make it easy for a potential employer to discount you right off the bat because your email address is unprofessional. Make sure it includes your name or initials so it's clear to the business exactly who they are contacting. If necessary, create a separate email account specifically for your job search.

2. Don't make a lengthy list
Businesses don't have time to read through a laundry-list of your experience and be inundated with industry key words. Keep your resume to one to two pages, and contextualize your experience.

3. Customize
Do not use the same form resume for every job application. Different businesses will value different skills, and it all hinges on the position you're applying for. Read the job posting carefully, and tailor your resume accordingly.

4. Use key words
Although it's not a good idea to stuff your resume with as many random keywords as possible, you should try to use words found in the job posting to highlight your skills. Using them will indicate to the business that you are well-qualified for the position.

5. Emphasize accomplishments
Rather than only listing responsibilities you were entrusted with in your previous positions, be specific about results you obtained. For example, don't just say that you implemented a new filing system, quantify how much your organization boosted employee productivity.

6. Don't pad your resume
Do not waste a recruiter's time by padding your resume with irrelevant experience. Instead, highlight your strongest qualifications by putting them at the top of your resume and list compelling achievements.

7. Triple-proof
Having a spelling or grammar error in your resume is pretty much a guarantee that you won't be asked to interview, no matter how strong your qualifications are. It can signal unprofessionalism and a lack of attention to detail, neither of which are desirable qualities in an employee.

8. Be honest
Above all, be honest on your resume. If you exaggerate or lie outright, it will likely come back to haunt you either in your interview or later in your professional business career. Save yourself the trouble by telling the truth.
