Top Information Technology Work Environments

The best places to work in IT.

In information technology news, ComputerWorld has officially announced it's 2014 selection for the top 100 companies to work for in IT. This is the 21st year the website has conducted the survey. The top 100 can be filtered by company size, geographical region and job criteria on ComputerWorld's website. Computerworld then received access to nearly 500 nominated companies, requesting employee statistics and company figures. Computerworld then provided a 51-question survey for each nominee to complete. The editorial team at ComputerWorld formulated the list using a variety of factors such as compensation, work environment, benefits and career development.

Large companies
ComputerWorld defined companies as large if they consisted of over 5,000 U.S. employees. The big winner this year was Quicken Loans, which ComputerWorld praised for offering extensive in-house training for IT workers and retaining employees. Quicken Loans has over 1,000 IT workers in the United States. In descending order, the remainder of the top five included USAA, General Mills, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants and DHL Express.

Midsize Companies
The professional social networking website LinkedIn placed first in the midsize category, defined as companies between 1,000 and 5,000 U.S employees. LinkedIn has special benefits for tech employees including "InDays" once a month, a time where employees are encouraged to work on personal projects and brainstorm innovation. The company also encourages its IT team to organize social, company-wide events. Credit Acceptance, Mastercard, Informatica and Johnsonville Sausage ranked two through five in this category, respectively.

Small Companies
The No. 1 ranking company with less than 1,000 employees was Noah Consulting, an information management firm located in Houston. IT workers at this company are encouraged to attend regular social events that include volunteer opportunities, monthly happy hours and biannual company events. Noah Consulting also ranked 8th overall in employee retention.  University Health System Consortium, Sev1Tech, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Commonwealth Financial Network rounded out the top five.

Unsurprisingly, some companies that made the list have consistently been included in the past. For example, the payroll company Paychex has made the list 10 years in a row, proving to consistently be one of the best places to work in IT.
